The Problem with Evangelical Extremism

img_6070This is probably going to be a long rant of mine, so you might as well buckle up and possibly get a beverage. We’re going to be here a while. The past couple years have brought us a complete shit show of extremism but the past two weeks we have seen the First Amendment of this country come under attack with ridiculous, religious-based laws spilling out of the red states in the attempt to control American women.

Now, as a woman of childbearing age that willingly shut her shop down less than two months ago, I know that *I* personally am in the clear. I mean, there is a laundry list of what if options I can look at but as a whole, I feel like I am in better shape than most women in the south that may not have as much privilege as I do. And by that I mean, a decent health insurance policy that actually covered the procedure. I am also privileged enough to know that employers, insurance companies, and providers have the opportunity these days to deny women this type of procedure or simply not pay for their birth control which is nothing short of a step backward for American women.

As someone who comes from a family with a long line of teenage pregnancy before Roe W. Wade and the stories, secrets, and nightmares were something very real and very damaging for the generation of women who raised us. The same generation that fought for the availability of birth control and the option of safe and legal abortion after women were dying from back-alley abortions. Roe has been the law of the land for a very long time and the attack on the law today has little to do with abortion itself, and all to do with controlling American women since we’ve decided to take our country back by storm.

99 years in prison as punishment for having an abortion when rapists’ are skating off with a little more than community service in 2019? The entire thing stinks, with Alabama and Georgia taking the cake on shitty and over the top punishment for women.  What will we tell our daughters? What will the desperate women in these states do? The single mother who already has had her food stamps cut and her Medicaid insurance canceled because working two jobs made her make just a little too much for her coverage? The Republican’s writing these laws aren’t concerned about the genuine impact of these laws because if they did… they would see the health crisis they are going to create.

The United States already falls behind nearly every industrialized nation around the world when it comes to maternal mortality and infant mortality. Women are dying at alarming rates and instead of working to reduce this public health crisis, our lawmakers are seeking to intensify the problem. All with the basis of the Judaeo-Christian values. But silly me, I thought the First Amendment of the United States strictly states:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

We have separation of Church and State for a reason and it is what our founding fathers decided to open the Constitution of the United States with for a goddamn reason. So why in the year 2019 did that change? Because the American Christian Taliban is now in charge and they are willing to do everything to suppress women in America. Make no mistake, this is no coincidence. With the mid-term elections showing the sheer strength of female voters & the power of women running for office… old white men are scared because we are pissed.

These men think so little of women they will make absolutely any excuse to blame women for anything… including their own rapes. This has only intensified since so many men and women have come out to share their own stories of sexual assault with the Me Too movement. We saw a survivor badgered in a Supreme Court Justice’s confirmation hearings as if she wasn’t even a human being but we want to jump through hoops for a non-viable embryo? What the fuck is going on Y’all?

At the end of the day, I don’t think any of the men who are pushing these votes and suppressive laws will ever have an unwanted pregnancy considering absolutely none of them have a uterus. My motto? No uterus… no fucking say.

I will continue to fight tooth and nail against evangelical lawmakers who are forcing all American’s to comply with their religious-based laws. I have no doubt that the ACLU will be getting involved along with countless pro-choice organizations to fight this. You cannot expect everyone to give a shit about your religious background unless you want different religious groups to start forcing their beliefs down your throat.

For eight years all we heard was Obama was going to bring Sharia Law to the United States but isn’t it funny how that never happened… Until the Republicans took control of the country?
